Goldwater Scholarship

The Barry Goldwater Scholarship is the premier national award for students seeking research careers in natural sciences, mathematics, and engineering. In honor of Senator Barry Goldwater, the scholarship awards students $7,500 in their junior and senior years. Students applying in their sophomore and junior years must demonstrate significant research experience, which includes the development of original ideas and mastery of technique. Students applying to the scholarship must be planning to pursue a Ph.D. in natural sciences, mathematics, or engineering. Each year the Goldwater application portal opens in late August. Students will work on applications in consultation with their faculty mentors and the Office of Nationally Competitive Awards, turning in applications by Nov. 1. UTSA is able to nominate 4 students plus 1 transfer student to compete in the national competition, which is due at the end of January.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be a full-time matriculated sophomore or junior pursuing a degree at an accredited 2- or 4-year institution of higher education.
  • Students must be either a sophomore (2 years left) or a junior (1 year left) before graduation.
  • Intend to pursue a research career in a natural science, mathematics or engineering,*
  • Have a college grade point average of at least a 3.00 on a 4.00 scale (Goldwater Scholars have an average GPA of 3.95)
  • Be a U.S. citizen from the 50 states or the District of Columbia; a U.S. national for those students nominated by institutions in Puerto Rico, Guam, Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands; or a permanent resident. A permanent resident nominated for the scholarship must include a letter stating his/her intent to become a U.S. citizen. A photocopy of the nominee’s Permanent Resident Card, also known as the Alien Registration Card or Green Card, must also be submitted.
